Recently this young man has been gaining a lot of publicity and he deserves it. My soulmate and I had the fortune to see him a couple of years ago when he was supporting Evan Dando on an exceedingly low key UK tour. At the time I heard both Radish and his album and thought it was good although not something I would listen to on repeat for several hours at a time, that night I was won over.
Due to a glitch with the booking office we found out last minute that we were without tickets. Despite having paid £45.36 for train tickets, got up at 5.30am to get the train to ensure we to the show, we ended up standing outside the venue at 7.25pm talking to big scary blackmen whose job is simultaniously professional heavies and ticket touts - we wanted tickets and of the 9 touts only one had tickets, and he only had 2..... amazingly he only wanted double price so we paid up and skipped up the steps, flashing student union cards as we went so as not to have to sign the waver accepting all liability for injuries.
I had a really good time, it was a nice audience and excellent music. Then it got better as after the show we sneaked backstage and sat down with Evan, Ben Kweller and Ben Lee who had also played. Evan was being mellow with a beer in one hand, his guitar in the other. We got stuff signed, were given guitar strings and seranaded with Evan's version of QOTSA's 'Feel good hit of the summer' in which the words were replaced with items readily available in your local drugstore, such as 'Colgate' and 'Head and Shoulders'.
Since then when I hear any song by Ben Kweller it sounds like Pooh Bear music, happy, bouncy and fun fun fun.
