In recent months various record companies have been blaming music piracy via the internet for declining music sale. I have an alterative theory: the music is so bad people are refusing to buy it. The reason that the music is so bad is because the people making it cannot be bothered or physically cannot move any body part enough to make good music
It is possible to plot the decline of the Deftones by the weight put on by leader singer Chino. Much of the energy and innovation of debut 'Adreniline' had already been lost by the time of their peak with 'Around the Fur', while 2000's 'White Pony' was slow, uninspired and sluggish. Having seen the video for the single 'Minerva' it makes the extras on the 'Mini maggot' repacked cash-in CD look inventive instead of just being random gas masks and implied sex. Musically 'Minerva' sounds similar to new Feeder songs, that is whiny with bad lyrics, the only disceneable words being "god bless you all, this song is some random noise." It appear that despite being told in July 2001 to take singing lessons Chino has not bothered, or possibly he has perminently damaged his voice by trying to eat 4 pies at once.

Following the undeserved success of 'the Matrix', every semi-rock band is desperate to get on the soundtrack for one or both of the sequals. The Deftones' album track 'Lucky You' features on 'Matrix: Reloaded' and is far worse than the track submitted to one of 'The Crow' franchise, again reflecting that weight is an issue. Also, style has taken increasing precidence over substance, for example Limp Bizkit changing their name to the single word, all lower-case 'limpbizkit', combined with the search for a Japanese guitarist or the unveiling of the new guitarist at the band's WWE Wrestlemania performance.
For some reason Kerrang! described Good Charlotte as being "pretty boy pop punksters." I am at a loss to explain how anyone could see a bunch of fat freaks with dire piercings as pretty, although they do fulfill the current criteria to be deemed punk. Additionally having had the misfortune to inadvertently see them the other day their music is best described as forgetable pop. I was vaguely aware of time passing but did not actually register the occurance of any events.
Though for promotional reasons they cannot openly reason in this way, the curse of being too sluggish to jump around or make good music almost validates the RIAA's actions. See also: Papa Roach, Metallica, Green Day, Blink 182, Chimiara, Staind, Raging Speen Horn, Soulfly, AFI...
(In the interests of equality, do not overlook the antithesis, whereby a band is too malnourished to perform, or indeed function normally. See also: Silverchair.)
